Derek Partridge’s purpose in recounting his epic trip around the world in 33 days is to share his experiences—gained from travel in 75 countries, living and working in 8 of them, using his 5 languages—to promote understanding and tolerance of the many different ways and customs of the world’s people.
Both Derek and his parents were surprised to learn that he was a gifted child, according to Margaret Branch, author of “Gifted Children”. Derek attended Paris and Barcelona Universities, was an officer in the Royal Air Force, a City of London Special Constable, an honorary LA County Deputy Sheriff and, CEO of several companies, eg: Conservation Tools & Technology, Cinema Translation Center in Rome and Kick-Eez UK (shotgun recoil pads). He was a consultant to Alfred Nobel’s Nitro Nobel (Sweden), Winchester (UK), Armi Perazzi (Italy), Eley Ammunition (UK) and Armas Kemen (Spain).
In Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) he was RTV’s chief news anchor and talk show host… nicknamed RPC: Rhodesia’s Premier Celebrity. He also trained Rhodesian SWAT teams. He wrote the 6-page leaflet “Rhodesia–As It Really Is”. 10 million copies were distributed in 42 countries and London’s prestigious Daily Telegraph described it as: “… a drop of truth in an ocean of lies”. All this makes Derek an interesting and unusual author.

A Smile is His Passport! from Honey Raider, President, Talent Representatives, Inc. New York
What happens to a hurricane that has nowhere to go? I know one which traveled around the world in 33 days and, instead of wreaking havoc, it absorbed the best of this universe and its people… and then offered the distilled essence to those who cared to listen.
Derek Partridge is that gentle hurricane… his words provoke our minds, stimulate our emotions, breathe fresh air into our thinking… and make us feel good to be alive.
He is no ordinary man and this is no ordinary book. It is not just a story of travel, but an account of one man’s experiences in tasting what this life has to offer. Derek makes his travels through countries a journey through living. Each happening comes alive as he describes it with a candidness that shows he is not afraid to open himself to the world he passes through… and he shares those experiences with us. Each place has its special meaning to him… and he brings that to us. So, his adventures become our adventures.
There is beauty, romance, laughter; anger and pain… along with all the other components of life that man has to deal with… if he is to live fully.
The title “A Smile Is My Passport” epitomizes Derek Partridge’s philosophy of life and the book is much more than a chronicle of one of his trips. It is–to me—and I hope to you, a positive testament to daring, doing, loving, caring and sharing.
Those of us fortunate enough to have met Derek on his travels have found our lives enriched. You too will share these riches through the following pages.
Derek Partridge is a “rare bird”… may he always fly high!

A relatively unbiased comment from Bob Stern, my very critical elder brother, a former print and TV journalist in London and Winston-Salem:
Through chapter 2. Very good read. I got through with no difficulty. It flows and flows quickly. Good writing, bro.
Read your chapters on Beirut and Egypt and found both so well done that I know without doubt that I shall continue. What a brother! Kudos.
You have a gift, a rare gift, of being so candid as to draw in a legion of supportive readers. Most of your observations are relevant. You have written a fine book here, Derek, and thank you for steering me to the last part of Smile, the Rhodesian chapter.
